Her Space Holiday vs. MGMT
What the hell? I've tried looking this up, but I've found no mention of it so far. But maybe I missed it. Whatever. I feel like I must bring this up nonetheless.
MGMT, who's been getting a lot of attention lately from indie music mags & blogs, and will be playing Coachella, apparently "borrowed" a song from Her Space Holiday, repackaged it, and decided to sell it as their own. MGMT's song 'Time To Pretend' is ripped off of Her Space Holiday's 'Sleepy California'. It pisses me off that those so called music critics, sitting on their high horses, talking about the next best thing, lack the capacity to call a band out for that. I would like to see MGMT pay Her Space Holiday a portion of every cent they make off of 'Time To Pretend', and publicly apologize for stealing someone else's work. We'll see if that happens.
In the meanwhile, check out the 2 songs, and see for yourself!

I found this comment on metacritic:
"Sharpa J. gave it a0:
In 2003, Her Space Holiday released an album called "Young Machines". In 2007/08 (retail), MGMT have received critical acclaim at the same time as completely ripping off HSH's 'Sleepy California' in the form of 'Time to Pretend'. Ridiculous, and pull your heads out of your asses!!!"
I'm assuming this isn't you.
Nope not me - but I do like the fact that someone else has found the same to be true!
Hmmm... well played.
I'm missing the similarity...I guess the tune is a little similar, but it is clearly just coincidence. Have you listened to the two songs?
Each song uses different instruments, completely different lyrics, different everything. There is no way Time to Pretend can be called "a repackaged" version of Sleepy California. And to think MGMT should PAY Her Space Holiday, for happening to write a song with similar tunes is ridiculous.
Seriously? This isn't a simple chord progression that has been used in a different context by some other band. The music is exactly the same, and even the vocals are the same melodically speaking. If you can't hear that, you need to listen to the songs again. I didn't just wake up one morning and decide to rail on MGMT. I listened to the tracks over and over again. I suggest you do the same.
Come on! It may be similar, but i listened to both songs more than once and I still can't agree "the music is exactly the same"... and if it's so, i really think that MGMT version is greater.

I agree that they sound very similar. I heard that MGMT song in a commercial and thought it was Her Space Holiday. Nonetheless, MGMT's song is better and is a better band.
I completely agree with you. I heard this song and was like...that sounds exactly like that Her Space Holiday song. The lyrical content is very similar as well. It's ridiculous.
There are definetely similiaraties, but I don't think it is necessarily a 'rip off', as youy say. There are many songs ouyt there with similiar melodies, that are not rip offs of each other, it just worked out that way.
Besides, even if they did rip it off, they definetely changed quite a bit, thus it is less that they copied Sleepy California and more that they were slightly inspired or influenced by it.
You're just upset that Her Space Holiday fucking sucks and MGMT is actually talented. Those sound nooothing alike, you twat.
i hear similarities but mgmt is definately better.
Similarites purely coincidential, with the millions of songs going out now days, it's impossible those kind of situation doesn't pop up. They use the same chord progession....so what, those are totally diffrent tunes. My two cents.
Screw you for saying that mgmt copied from another band, mgmt is so talented and a dam good band. Just because it has a little similarity doesn't mean they copied it.
Found this website because I googled "her space holiday time to pretend" because I thought MGMT was covering a Her Space Holiday song... I was super confused when I heard Time to Pretend.
Sleepy California is a better song (because it's so super sad- melodramatially so maybe). Did MGMT rip it off?
It sounds really, really similar. Maybe it was a subconcious thing.
Dunno. They are practically the same song though.
Yeah my friend was playing the MGMT song about a year ago and I said "oh this is that her space holiday song right?". To which she responded no. Then I got confused and angry because I knew HSH had a song EXACTLY like it. I've been waiting for someone to point this out, I thought it was a remix or something...
It sounds far too similar to be coincidence, and anyone who says that MGMT are better than HSH is not someone who should have the right to express their opinion on ANYTHING. And to whoever said the lyrics are different, they're not.
thought i was the only one that thought this! i her the song and thought it was her space holiday and was so happy for him...and was bummed when i found out it was someone else.
