MuteMath, The Cinematics, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Club Of The Sons

Since there were 4 pretty awesome bands that played the House of Blues on Wednesday night, I'm going to go about this post in a new way. I'm going to do a mini-review for each opening act, then post a song, the links, and repeat the process all over, and end up with a full review for MuteMath. So here goes nothing!

Club Of The Sons

One half of Earthsuit formed what is known as MuteMath, one of the best new bands to see in concert. The frontman from Earthsuit, Adam LaClave, first formed Macrosick that disbanded after Katrina, and then formed Club Of The Sons, which is an interesting experiment with elements of rhythm and blues, electrorock, and southern blues, with a hint of glam thrown in. The blend is intriguing, and the performance (however glam) was actually pretty good. They put on a good show, and I couldn't help but bob my head along. I got a chance to meet up with them after, and Mark, the keyboardist/backup vocalist said that they should have an EP out soon. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from them!

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

I've dug the sound (and the name) of Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin since the day I first heard of them. I hadn't, however, seen any pictures of their concerts or heard anything about their performances. When they took stage, it was The Cinematics who were on the bill, and so I was slightly confused (as I'd met the bassist and drummer beforehand). If nerd-chic is considered fashion, then these guys were totally in style. I'm not mocking them, I simply envy that I can't pull off that look. Not only did each of the musicians contribute well to the overall sound, they even switched around roles (drums -> guitar -> bass) to "keep [themselves] entertained".

The Cinematics

About a month ago, a buddy of mine in New York texted me saying that he was at the MuteMath show and that the cinematics were really good. Of course, he was talking about The Cinematics and not about how MuteMath's set appeared. This prompted my inquiry into their music, and I found myself adoring these musicians out of Scotland. My attempt to describe their style would be a mix between The Feeling and The Fratellis, but with a unique edge and enough energy to leave the aforementioned wondering what hit em. The live set lived up to its expectation, and rather outdid itself. I can't wait to catch em again sometime.

MuteMath

MuteMath was, of course, the band I came to see (as did the rest of the crowd), and so the applauds at their entrance was incredible. The entire room was packed, and ready to get one hell of a show. I bet that nearly a third didn't even know what they were getting into! I'm not going to go into all the details of the show just because you just have to be there, but I'll post some of my highlights and the setlist:

1. Typical - started off with a mellow intro (had to start with this song or Chaos)
2. Chaos - had an amazing reggae-esque interlude, which was really well done
3. Picture
4. Voice - a new song that got me excited for their new material (whenever it comes out); during the instrumental section, Darren (drummer) was railing on the snare, when I heard a snap, saw the drumstick bounce off the snare, fly into the audience, and hit me... oh yes, if you were there, that was me :D
5. Without It
6. Plan B - the musical melody for the verses was changed up, so I was confused for a little bit - the lyrics helped me figure out the song, however; Roy's bass solo was absolutely ridiculous for this song
7. Stare At The Sun - Roy brought out his stand-up bass, and truly shined in this song; Greg decided to use the drumstick to beat the noise out of his guitar
8. Control
9. Noticed
10. We Break The Same - Paul went all out in this song doing flips over the keyboard and then doing handstands on it too... damn the House of Blues for not allowing cameras!
11. Reset - the standard encore for the guys - Paul was jumping back and forth between the crowd and the stage

I do believe I jacked up my knee jumping around that night, but it was great nonetheless. I can't wait for them to come back around, and with new stuff!
