Somme: 'Weight EP'

For those of you that enjoy instrumental music along the lines of Explosions In The Sky like I do, there is an up and coming band out of Chicago that you most definitely need to check out. Their name: Somme.

What astounds me about these guys more than anything is that they're just two guys making all this sound! They do an incredible job with dynamics, and at times are on par with Explosions and even Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Of course they don't have the crazy ramblings like Godspeed, but you get my point. What they've done with this EP is quite amazing and definitely leaves you longing for more. The opener, 'Zeal' starts out quite mellow and builds up into this noise frenzy with drums paving the way for the guitar to do its work. The next track 'Massless' was the first track I'd heard a couple weeks ago and reminded me so much of Explosions that I knew I had to post it.

'Forge' takes a step back and allows for a seemingly dissonant melody to guide much of the song. But it's not dissonance but musical ingenuity that makes this track stand out the way it does. 'Anvils' is similar in its laid back appeal, and by far my favorite track on the EP, 'Badgebode', is simply beautiful even though it's only about 45 seconds long. The EP isn't available yet, but you can check it out at their myspace. If you're in the Chicago area, go check them out at the Canopy Club this Sunday at 8PM. If you do check them out, I'd love to hear about it!
