Chris Paul Overall @ The Gypsy Lounge

I first heard Chris Paul Overall's music when I went to see him play at the House of Blues in Anaheim last year. A friend of mine is part of his band and had invited me out to come see them play. They put on a great show, and the music was actually pretty decent. I bought the album, "Bruiser", and have enjoyed it for quite a while now. The album itself is very different from the live show, it having a folkier sound to it, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Well, on Friday night, CPO had an album release party for his acoustic album, "The Sways". The openers were actually pretty decent (finally got to see Pawnshop Kings), and the lead up to CPO and gang was worth the wait. The set itself was great with two of my favorites being played by the band: New York and Push. CPO then introduced the new album and proceeded to play some songs on there. What caught my ear right away was the song 'Moment At A Time', which I believe he said he wrote about his dad. At one point he even brought up his sister on stage to sing along with him (she has some great music as well).

The album itself is great. Anyone that enjoys acoustic music must pick it up. All the songs are beautifully and cleanly put together. The 5-song EP finds CPO and his acoustic guitar doing a marvelous job, and I look forward to seeing his acoustic set next week at The Plush Cafe in Fullerton. If you enjoy the music, come check it out on Friday night.
