Deerhoof & Busdriver At El Rey
Wednesday night was the start of my 2007 concert calender, and what a way to start! The headliner was Deerhoof and opening for them were Busdriver and Hella. Hella was okay - sounded as if they'd departed from At The Drive-In, but never quite reached Mars Volta. But Busdriver was surprisingly amazing, and Deerhoof kicked more ass as a 3-person band than many 4 or more membered bands I've seen in the past.
Busdriver took the stage first, and never having heard anything by him, I was unsure of what to look for. But as soon as he got on, his energy became the driving force of the entire set. I don't see too many hip-hop shows, but that was definitely a good one to be at. He spits faster than Outkast and his lyrics revolve a lot around social commentary, some of which I noticed took a jab at Hollywood et al. He was definitely a good opener, and had Hella not been performing, he would have really propelled the night into Deerhoof without a hitch. But I can't complain.
After Hella, Deerhoof took the stage, and they put on a show even better than I thought they would. Like I said earlier, the 3 of them had more energy and spunk than a lot of bands I've seen. Satomi Matsuzaki is the cutest, spunkiest, little Asian woman I have ever seen take stage. The highlight for me had to be when she did 'Panda, Panda, Panda' - it's such a cute song, and when she (kinda) danced to it, it made it quite memorable! Most of their set, they almost jammed through with the songs played perfectly where they fit. They all knew where to cut out and come back in, and hearing them play a mixture of old and new songs was totally worth spending the time looking for parking.
